The Maldives Customs Service has released shipments of rolling tobacco that were previously seized, clarifying that the importation of such products is not explicitly prohibited by law.

The shipments were initially confiscated following instructions from the Ministry of Health, which had implemented measures under the Tobacco Control Act. The act, passed by Parliament and ratified by the President last year, includes provisions to curb tobacco use in the country.

The Ministry of Health had directed Customs to seize tobacco-related imports, citing the prohibition on manufacturing tobacco products in the Maldives. However, Customs later determined that while manufacturing is illegal, the importation of rolling tobacco does not violate existing laws.

A Customs official explained that the agency operates as an enforcement body and cannot confiscate goods unless they are explicitly prohibited under the law.

Earlier this month, the Health Ministry also instructed Customs to seize packaging materials related to tobacco products. In compliance, Customs confiscated shipments on January 2, including rolling tobacco, filters, and paper.
