The Hankede Bridge in Addu City has been completed, and there is no reason to delay its opening, according to Addu City Mayor Ibrahim Nizar.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Mayor Nizar highlighted that the bridge is ready for use and urged the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure to take responsibility for its inauguration. He also emphasized the need to rebuild the deteriorating link road and repair the temporary sand road in the Hankede area, which has become a significant issue for residents.
The temporary sand road, initially intended as a short-term solution, has become heavily potholed and muddy due to persistent rainfall, causing considerable inconvenience. Residents have expressed frustration over the road's condition, as it has essentially become a permanent route despite its inadequacy.
The Hankede Bridge was completed in mid-2024 and handed over to the government. Despite earlier announcements that the bridge would be opened in July, September, and November last year, none of these deadlines were met. The government has not provided any updates or reasons for the delay, leaving residents waiting for the long-anticipated opening.
Mayor Nizar stated that the Addu City Council has repeatedly requested the government to expedite the opening of the bridge but has not received a satisfactory response.
The 1.4 km four-lane Hankede Bridge was constructed under an $800 million line of credit from Exim Bank of India. The project, awarded to India-based company Fcons in October, is expected to significantly improve transportation and connectivity in Addu City once inaugurated. Residents now await the opening, which would provide much-needed relief from the current transportation challenges.
