President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that an additional wide-body aircraft will be delivered in October this year, enabling the Maldives' national airline to begin direct flights to several European destinations.
In his Presidential Statement delivered at the first session of the 2025 Parliament, the President highlighted the expansion of the country's aviation sector, with plans to enhance connectivity to Europe. This addition to the fleet is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the Maldives' global air travel network.
The President also shared plans for the development of multiple airports across the country. Notably, the terminal at Velana International Airport is set to open before October this year, marking a significant milestone in the airport's expansion. Additionally, the Hanimaadhoo and Addu City airports are slated for opening this year, with the Muli airport expected to open in April.
Further development includes work on various other airports, including F. Nilandhoo, Th. Guraidhoo, Th. Vilufushi, Aa. Mathiveri, Gdh. Kaadehdhoo, Ga. Villingili, Sh. Milandhoo, Sh. Komandoo, Sh. Bilehfahi, R. Fainu, Ha. Dhihdhoo, R. Alifushi, B. Thulhaadhoo, L. Kahdhoo, Hdh. Kulhudhuhfushi, and Sh. Funadhoo airports, with construction planned to proceed in stages throughout the year.
The delivery of the new wide-body aircraft follows the arrival of Maldivian’s first wide-body aircraft on January 6 this year. The continued expansion of the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure is a key part of the government’s strategy to enhance international connectivity and support economic growth through tourism and trade.
