The Ministry of Health is set to launch the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Strategic Action Plan to reduce the number of children born with thalassemia in the Maldives.
Deputy Minister of Health, Mohamed Fiznee, addressed the growing concern over the increasing number of children affected by thalassemia in the country. He confirmed that the government is prioritizing public awareness initiatives and the enhancement of treatment systems.
The action plan will focus on ensuring continuous access to medications for thalassemia patients, expanding blood supply networks, and facilitating bone marrow transplants for affected children.
As part of the plan, five fully-equipped blood banks are being established across the country, with three expected to open by the end of this year. These facilities will be located at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital, and L. Gan Regional Hospital.
The new blood banks will ensure that thalassemia patients, particularly in rural areas, have improved access to life-saving blood. The government is also upgrading existing blood banks and has been working to expand services since 2024, with plans to further improve facilities in regions like Addu City and Kulhudhuffushi.
