Former MDP Chairperson Hassan Latheef has vowed that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will liberate Parliament from what he described as government control.
Speaking at an MDP rally (Haruge Jalsa) on Friday, Latheef accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of attempting to return the country to the pre-2008 era, when executive power was largely unchecked. He asserted that the MDP would not allow such a regression.
He said some PNC members want to hand over all power to President Muizzu and are working to take the country back to how it was before 2008.
Latheef further alleged that President Muizzu is trying to consolidate control over Parliament, independent institutions, and the judiciary. He stated that the aim is to bring the people's treasury under government influence.
He also questioned the allocation of the MVR 55 billion state budget for 2024, claiming that it lacked transparency and had not contributed to national development.
