Police have revealed that MVR 530,000 seized from foreign workers was allegedly taken to the residence of former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed.
According to a statement issued by the police, the money was discovered during a search of Shamaan’s home as part of an ongoing investigation into misconduct within the Maldives Immigration. Authorities stated that immigration employees outside the designated task force and risk management sections had misused their positions to conduct an unauthorized search of a residence occupied by foreign workers.
During the search, officers found a large sum of money. A detainee was reportedly released in the middle of the night on Shamaan’s orders, carrying MVR 530,000. Later, other immigration officers encountered the same individual on the street and discovered the money in his possession.
Following these developments, police conducted a search of Shamaan’s house, where they seized a significant amount of cash and electronic devices. Additionally, five individuals were searched under a court order, and their electronic equipment was confiscated.
Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. Shamaan was dismissed from his position as Immigration Controller amid the ongoing investigation.
