Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed has been arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation into immigration officers allegedly extorting money from foreign workers.
Police confirmed that Shamaan was taken into custody under a court order.
According to police, immigration employees—outside of the designated task force and risk management sections—abused their positions to raid a residence occupied by foreign workers. Investigators found that a detainee, who had MVR 530,000, was released at midnight under Shamaan’s orders. The money was later taken to Shamaan’s residence.
Authorities have since searched his home and seized cash and electronic devices as part of the probe.
