Former Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed has appealed his arrest in the High Court, following his remand in custody on charges of extorting large sums of money from foreigners.

The Criminal Court had ordered a 15-day remand for Shamaan on March 20. According to the High Court registry, he filed the appeal yesterday, though the court has not yet decided whether to accept the case.

Police previously stated that several foreigners were taken into immigration custody with large amounts of cash, and one was released upon Shamaan’s orders in exchange for MVR 530,000. As part of the investigation, police have also seized the phone of one of Shamaan’s family members.
