The Criminal Court has ordered Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, the former Controller General of Immigration, to remain in custody until the conclusion of his trial on corruption charges.

Shamaan was dismissed from his post on March 21 and arrested the following day for allegedly releasing a foreign national and extorting MVR 530,000 from him.

The court initially remanded him in custody for 15 days, and today, it extended the remand until the end of the trial. Shamaan’s appeal against the remand was dismissed by the High Court.

The police investigation into the case continues, with four individuals, including Shamaan, having been arrested. Authorities have seized the passports of two officers involved in the case, and a mobile phone belonging to a family member of Shamaan has also been confiscated as part of the ongoing inquiry.
