The Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that Zakat Fund scholarships will be officially unveiled this week, opening up opportunities for advanced education in Islamic sciences and support for critical medical needs.
Minister Shaheem stated that, with the blessings of Allah, the long-anticipated scholarships will offer Master’s and PhD study opportunities in several important and key areas of Islamic studies. In addition to academic fields, the initiative will also provide support for super specialist training in medical areas currently lacking in the country.
He also revealed that financial assistance will be extended to students who are pursuing Islamic education at their own expense in countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In addition, the Zakat Fund will cover some essential areas in the medical field where the Maldives currently lacks super-specialists.
“These opportunities will be funded through the Fi Sabilillah portion of the Zakat Fund,” said Dr. Shaheem. “The increase in Zakat contributions, thanks to the generosity of Maldivians, is a victory for Islam.”
He emphasized that the Fund will also allocate resources for Quran education programs, including initiatives to support the memorization of the Quran and the production of Hafiz.
Minister Shaheem praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his commitment to strengthening the Zakat system in the country. “The President’s efforts are bearing fruit, and we are now seeing tangible outcomes,” he added.
He further noted that the Zakat Fund continues to support life-saving medical treatments, including kidney and bone marrow transplants, as well as treatments for cancer and lung disease.
The scholarship announcement is expected to provide a significant boost to Islamic education and specialized healthcare development in the Maldives.
