The Maldives Police Service has announced that 80 percent of the money lost to scams last week has been successfully recovered.

According to statistics from the Anti-Scam Center, 45 scam cases were reported between the 13th and 19th of this month. The total reported loss amounted to MVR 481,520.67, of which 80 percent, MVR 383،610.08 has been recovered, police said.

The most common type of scam was e-commerce fraud, with 26 cases reported. Facebook Marketplace was identified as the most frequently used platform by scammers, with 20 related cases registered.

Other reported scams included 10 cases involving foreign currency exchange, five phone scam cases, and one case each of impersonation, phishing, romance scams, and money laundering.

Scammers used various platforms including Viber, phone calls, eBay, Messenger, Telegram, and Instagram to target victims.

Police have urged the public to stay alert and verify any suspicious activity before engaging in online transactions.
