Home Minister, Mr Imran Abdulla says that the prison officers need proper training to rehabilitate the detainees and introduce them back to the community.
Referring to the training program for the prison officers by UNODC, the Minister said that it is an important step towards conducting proper training for the prison officers. Minister Mr Imran, described the training program as a working progress towards following the ‘Mandela Rules’ in prisons. This program will train prison officers to rehabilitate the detainees and introduce them back to the community.
Mr Imran added that ‘Mandela Rules’ have been introduced to the prisons and following the rules will help to avoid a lot of issues raised in prisons.
The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners also known as "the Nelson Mandela Rules" to honour the legacy of the late President of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, who spent 27 years in prison in the course of his struggle for global human rights, equality, democracy and the promotion of a culture of peace, is now translated and available from the Home Ministry’s website.
