At today’s Independence Day celebrations, Minister of Language, Culture, and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim emphasized the enduring spirit of the Maldivian people in defending their nation’s independence.

Speaking on the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence, Minister Naseer highlighted that the Maldivian State is an ancient entity that has strived to protect its sovereignty since its inception. He noted that while periods of foreign influence, including the British protection agreement from 1887 to 1965, overshadowed freedom, today marks a proud milestone of full independence.

Minister Naseer underscored the sacrifices and strategic efforts made throughout history to secure freedom and stressed the importance of strong foreign relations and national unity in safeguarding sovereignty. He praised former Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir for pivotal talks that led to independence from Britain.

The minister explained that the mindset, knowledge, skills, and patience to defend the country and continue advancing are vital. He added that unity is key to maintaining national security and peace.

The government remains committed to upholding the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives as a core policy, Minister Naseer affirmed.
