President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended heartfelt condolences following the passing of Hassan Sobir, a prominent statesman and recipient of the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.). Sobir passed away this morning at the age of 73 while undergoing treatment at Tree Top Hospital.
In a message shared on X, President Muizzu expressed deep sorrow over Sobir’s passing, describing it as a significant loss to the nation. The President paid tribute to Sobir’s extensive contributions across vital sectors, including tourism, fisheries, agriculture, and national planning, and praised his diplomatic service and decades of dedication to national development.
As a mark of national mourning, President Muizzu has ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast for three days starting Tuesday, 29 July 2025. The Government will hold a State Funeral, with funeral prayers to be conducted at Masjid al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu al-Auzam following Asr prayers today.
Sobir’s public service career began in 1973 and spanned over 38 years, during which he held several key positions in government. He served as Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Minister of Tourism, and later as Ambassador to countries including Belgium, the EU, Singapore, and most recently, Japan.
Throughout his career, Sobir played a pivotal role in advancing national economic growth, shaping development policy, and strengthening international relations. His leadership was instrumental in initiatives such as the 1,500-tonne cold storage facility in Kooddoo, the one million tree planting programme, and the expansion of tourism under the "Sunny Side of Life" campaign.
Sobir also served as a Member of Parliament for North Ari Atoll from 2000 to 2005.
