Maldives Police Services has confiscated 43 mobile phones from the special operation held in prisons today.

The special operations, jointly held by the Maldives Police Service, Maldives National Defense Force, and Maldives Correctional Service, were initiated at 05:30 am at Male’ Prison and Maafushi Prison. The operation was linked with the terrorist attack on President Nasheed and the ongoing crackdown on extremism.

Through this special operation, one mobile phone with a sim card was confiscated from Male’ prison while 43 mobile phones with sim cards were confiscated from Maafushi prison.



Police denied the allegations of using taser guns and use of force during the operation but said that pepper spray was used. Two prisoners received emergency aid treatments following pepper spray, said Police. In addition, one prisoner who was held in handcuffs was brought to hospital medical care in Male’ after trying to self harm himself, by banging his head on hard cement.

The terrorist attack on the former President of the Maldives, the current Speaker of the Parliament, took place with a homemade remote-controlled IED, strapped to a motorcycle parked near President Nasheed’s residence. It was detonated just as President Nasheed exited his residence and went to get in his car. A week earlier Initial three arrests in suspicion of the terror attack were made in Male’ City and Hulhumale’.

Following the attack, Maldives Police Service has initiated a crackdown on extremism across the Maldives. Through these special operations, 14 people have so far been arrested. Out of which, five people were arrested in connection to the terrorist attack on President Nasheed.
