Malaysia’s total coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic surpassed 1 million on Sunday after the country’s health ministry reported a record 17,045 new coronavirus cases.
After recording over 15,000 cases in each of the previous two days, Malaysia now has 1.013 million Covid-19 cases.
Malaysia’s Covid-19 numbers have continued to soar, despite it entering the third month of movement restrictions that started in May. Infections fuelled by more transmissible variants of concern, chiefly the Delta variant first identified in India, have defied a more stringent lockdown introduced on June 1.
The country’s vaccination rate however has picked up the pace, with nearly half of its eligible adult population having received at least one dose of vaccine as of Saturday.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has said that authorities are expected to ease Covid-19 restrictions for fully vaccinated people soon.
