Thailand plans to reopen Bangkok to fully vaccinated visitors in October, officials said on Friday, as the country seeks to salvage a tourism industry hammered by the pandemic.
Under the proposed plans, fully vaccinated international tourists would be able to travel to Bangkok and four other provinces without undergoing two weeks’ hotel quarantine from October 1. Later on October, 21 more destinations are expected to be added to the list.
The move to reopen is designed to complement Thailand’s Sandbox initiative, which was launched in July this year. Sandbox was the first step in reviving the country’s tourism industry.
Under the sandbox scheme, tourists have to stay within a certain area for seven days after arrival and take covid tests.
According to reports, around 26,000 international travelers visited Thailand under the Sandbox initiative, generating nearly $50 million in revenue according to a government spokesman. The initiative lets the fully vaccinated tourists enjoy destinations.
