India has gifted Cricket equipments worth MVR 1 million to the Cricket Board of Maldives (CBM).

During a special ceremony held today at iconic Ekuveni Synthetic Track Ground, Male’, Vice President Faisal Naseem accepted the Cricket Equipments donated by India. Along with Vice President Faisal Naseem, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Ahmed Mahaloof, High Commissioner of India, Munu Mahawar and CBM President Mr. Mohamed Faisal graced the event.

During the ceremony, in a video message, Mr. Anurag Thakur, Hon'ble Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, conveyed his best wishes to Maldivian sports persons and encouraged the Government of Maldives' to use their contribution to enhance Sports culture and healthy lifestyle policies. In addition, the High Commissioner of India His Excellency, Munu Mahawar described the gift as a token of the longstanding India-Maldives friendship and increasing cooperation in the field of sports between both countries.

Speaking at the event, Minister Mahloof thanked India for the close relationship and unwavering support for the development of sports in Maldives including the support through a USD 40 million Line of Credit which will change the whole landscape of sports infrastructure in the Maldives.

The event also had the presence of Maldives' Men and Women National Cricket Teams, along with cricket enthusiasts. The event was followed by a friendly cricket match between teams from India and Maldives.

India-Maldives cooperation in cricket has received a tremendous impetus with the visit of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to attend an Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Bengaluru in April 2019. To take forward with the cricketing ties between both countries, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has conducted training programs for Maldivian cricket coaches and umpires as well.
