Parliament Speaker and former President Mohammed Nasheed have said he hopes the appointment of a new President will start to solve the problems faced by the Sri Lankan people.

Sri Lanka's parliament today appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as president of the country.

President Nasheed tweeted congratulating Ranil on his appointment as President of Sri Lanka. In the tweet, Nasheed said he hope and pray that the difficulties faced by the Sri Lankan people can now start to be resolved.



Ranil Wickremesinghe along with former Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, and leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Party Anura Kumara Dissanayake contested the secret ballot in the parliament today.

Ranil received 134 votes in the vote, which was attended by 223 of the 225 members of the legislature. Dullas received 82 votes. Anura received three votes while four members' votes were invalid.
