Renewable energy can decrease the power demand and electricity expenses, said the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna.

She stated it while speaking at the handover ceremony of the Funadhoo power plant, to Fenaka today. Speaking at the ceremony, Environment Minister said that, not just the government subsidies can decrease the power demand and electricity expenses, but installing solar and renewable energy in different parts of the country. Hence, solar should be installed, as much or more than the current subsidies issued, she said.

She also said that within the next three years, the amount of electricity consumed will be reduced to 10 MW.

In addition, the Minister said the government is working to change the policies to install solar panels in island lagoon areas. The Maldives is a country with a large maritime area and, therefore efforts have been started to introduce modern technology used in the maritime worldwide, she said.

Furthermore, Minister highlighted that the Maldives is preparing to generate energy through the wind.

“Wind energy generation is also something we need to do in advance. We are preparing to install a 300 kW wind energy system in N. Manadhoo this year,” she said.
