Queen Elizabeth, Britain's longest-reigning monarch
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday declared the national flag to be flown at half-mast in mourning following the passing away of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch and head of the Commonwealth.

The Queen, whose rule spanned seven decades, passed away on Thursday at 96.

The Maldives would observe three-day mourning with the national flag flown at half-mast from September 9-12, 2022. Queen Elizabeth II is a recipient of the Maldives’ highest honor, the Grand Order of the Distinguished Rule of Ghaazee.

Queen Elizabeth II's tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War, and the UK's entry into - and withdrawal from - the European Union. Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.
