More than fifty parliamentarians from the ruling MDP have signed into a no-confidence motion which is in its preparatory stages to be introduced soon in the Majlis against the Speaker of the People’s Majlis and former President of the Republic Mohamed Nasheed.

The allegiance of the MPs preceded a Parliamentary Group meeting held today where thirty-six MPs voted in favor of the Speaker’s removal from the top post. MDP is represented in the parliament by fifty-six MPs, down from more than sixty over the past several weeks.

MDP’s parliamentary group leader Aslam believes that if introduced into the parliament, the motion will pass easily against Speaker Nasheed.

Parliamentary procedures require a simple majority – present and voting in the house, if the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker is to be removed from their privileged positions. The Speaker of the House is arguably the second most powerful job in the country.

Even if all eighty-seven MPs attended to the kick-out vote, PG leader Aslam’s faction in the Majlis will win over President Nasheed if their above claim is true.

Meanwhile , a no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah is sitting there in the parliament - shortly to be kick-started.

Eva left MDP recently with several MPs from the secessionist “Revival of a Thought” movement which is led by Speaker Nasheed. The movement has been okayed last week by the Elections Commission of Maldives to form their political party – The Democrats.

MDP’s PG Group decided to remove Nasheed from the Speaker’s chair today as his followers in the parliament, mainly former MDP MPs, have unanimously supported a no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath.

Reports say that MDA’s leader Ahmed Shiyam - a hotel boss and MP for Dhaal Atoll Meedhoo constituency, is also in favor of removing Nasheed from the chair.
