Ruling MDP’s parliamentarian representing the constituency South-Henveiru Ward, Hussain Shaheem has claimed that Speaker Nasheed and his supporters have put him in an environment of intimidation and fear.

Speaking on the floor in the Majlis on Wednesday, Hussain said that he has received threats from attendees - Nasheed’s supporters from The Democrats (a political party in formation stage with official approval), at the public gallery of the Majlis.

He said that about four attendees at the public gallery made threats when he took tea-break on the set time.

According to Hussain; in a separate incident, earlier he had filed a complaint with the Speaker when he was threatened elsewhere in the parliament building.

Failing to look into the previous case, Hussain claims that the Speaker also has made threats against him on Wednesday.

“When Nasheed was in the tea room, I complained to him about their swearing and threats against me. He said that he will tell them to cause me bodily harm”, Shaheem said.

Hussain believes that Wednesday’s episode of intimidation, swearing and verbal abuse - directed against him, was an organized occurrence.

The chamber of the parliament has failed over the past several days to do serious business.
