MDP’s parliamentary group leader Mohamed Aslam has described the present deadlock of the parliament as a deliberate attempt to delay debate on a no-confidence motion filed against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah.
Debate on her no-confidence motion scheduled for June 11, is now delayed according to the Secretariat of the Majlis due to recent changes in the representations of political parties in the Majlis.
These changes require that the Majlis revise the time allocation rule (clause 108 of parliamentary procedures) for debates.
PG Leader Aslam believes that there should be no ‘excuses’ for delaying debate on the motion. He said that earlier, it took a day or two to formally revise changes to compositions of permanent committees of the People’s Majlis when party-representations had changed.
Yesterday, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdullah said that the present deadlock of the parliament is caused by the government and ruling MDP.
She blamed the government and the ruling MDP for filing no-confidence motions against the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker - filed within days of each other, before debates ended and votes cast on a no-confidence motion filed earlier against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath.
