A 14-day notice to respond to a no-confidence motion filed in the parliament against the Speaker of the People’s Majlis Mohamed Nasheed was delivered to him on Monday.

Backed by fifty-four MPs, the no-confidence motion against the Speaker was filed in the parliament on June 7.

Weekends and public holidays will not be included in the 14-day count, according to the parliamentary procedures.

It is believed that the no-confidence motion will be tabled sometime in mid-August after the mandatory recess of the parliament as business for the second session will conclude at the end of this month.

MDP’s Parliamentary Group decided to remove Nasheed from the Speaker’s chair as his followers in the parliament; mainly former MDP MPs, supported a no-confidence motion against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath.

According to practiced parliamentary procedure, at least a fourth of all the sitting MPs must back a motion to be officially accepted by the Majlis for debate. Presently the number required is twenty-two.

Parliamentary rules state that a simple majority, present and voting, can remove either the Speaker or the Deputy Speaker.

If all eighty-seven MPs, attend for voting on the motion against Nasheed, at least 44 votes are required to remove him from his job.
