In a statement published yesterday, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has expressed deep concerns due to the current deadlock in the People’s Majlis.

Referring to the current stalemate of the parliament and expressing their concerns, HRCM said that if the Majlis is not functioning properly, human rights of the people -guaranteed in the legal system, are violated.

Also, the statement said that due to the stalemate in the Majlis, the parliamentary function of holding other branches of the government accountable: which is a significant part of the legislative assembly’s mandate and directly related to the rights of the people, is frozen.

HRCM was also concerned as the Majlis went into recess on Thursday without addressing important matters related to the presidential election - scheduled to start on September 9, and selection of an applicant to the membership of the Election Commission of Maldives.
