Almost indirectly labelling Speaker Mohamed Nasheed as an enemy of Islam, former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has said that “Nasheed is not a friend of Islam and that he will never work with him”.

Umar who is running for president as an independent candidate this September, speaking on a local talk show, told the host that Nasheed is an ultraliberal. Umar said unlike Nasheed, he is a conservative who wants to rule on the basis of the sacred Islamic law.

Detailing Nasheed’s unfriendliness with Islam, Umar said that during the three-year rule of Nasheed as president of the country from 2008, the then government made attempts at legalizing sale of alcohol in islands inhabited by Maldivians.

Umar who contested in the 2008 presidential elections, declined to endorse Nasheed who was elected to office in the second round when all the others who opposed Maumoon Abdul Qayoom sided with Nasheed.
