The People’s Majlis schedules its second sitting outside normal business for Monday, after going into recess on June 23.

The sitting is scheduled according to parliamentary rules as ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had requested to extend Majlis business before the present break at the end of the second session of the year on June 22.

MPs on Monday will start contributing, at nine in the morning, to agenda item set for the day on “revising the composition of permanent committees of the Majlis”, which had been discussed earlier in the chamber with no results as MPs continued to disagree on allocating percentage-points for party and non-party representations in the committees.

Majlis experienced a weeks-long stalemate before going into the present mandatory break at the end of the second session of the year.

The main cause of the stalemate was a no-confidence filing match fought between the collective opposition and the ruling MDP.

The no-confidence filing match was kicked off by the opposition by filing motions against the attorney general and the foreign minister.

Subsequently, ruling party’s MPs filed motions against the speaker and the deputy speaker.
