Southwest monsoon rains cause material damages in thirteen islands, says National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

Heavy rains over the past few days caused material damages in the following islands according to NDMA: Baa Atoll Maalhos, Lhaviyani Atoll Naifaru, Haa Alif Atoll Ihavandhoo, Shaviyani Atoll Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll Feevah, Shaviyani Atoll Komandoo, Haa Dhaal Atoll Kulhudhuffushi, Kaaf Atoll Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhiffushi and Huraa and Faaf Atoll Feeali and Alif Alif Atoll Feridhoo.

The rains flooded three houses in Maalhos, toppled boundary walls of two houses in Naifaru and sent a roof flying from a house in Naifaru according to NDMA.

In Ihavandhoo a house roof was removed by strong winds, and a boundary wall collapsed due to floods in the island.

The rains damaged a harbor hut in Funadhoo and a house roof in Feevah. Komandoo experienced floods that damaged several items in a house.

NDMA said that strong winds uprooted trees in Huraa, Maafushi, Dhiffushi and Thulusdhoo. Also, Feeali, Feridhoo and Kulhudhuffushi received noticeable damages.

NDMA is presently providing needed relief to the islands in coordination with island councils.

Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) issued several color alerts over the past few days to specific areas of the country.

MMS yesterday released an alert cautioning the public on possible sea swells that might hit shorelines of several islands resulting in inland floods.
