The most recently registered political party at the Elections Commission of Maldives - The Democrats (TD), decides to field a candidate in the presidential election in September.

According to the temporary Chairperson of TD, MP Hassan Latheef, a meeting of the provisional council of the party that was held yesterday evening decided to hold a presidential primary to select a candidate to contest in the race.

He also said that interested members will be able to register their names in the presidential primary of TD from the 17th of this month. The presidential primary will be conducted by the party’s Elections Committee, said MP Hassan.

In addition to the decision, the provisional council selected several internal committees in the meeting.

So far, five candidates have expressed their interest in contesting in the presidential race on September 9. They are President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the President of Maldives National Party, MP Mohamed Nazim, Jumhooree Party’s leader, MP Qasim Ibrahim, former President Abdulla Yameen, and independent candidate former Minister of Home Affairs under President Yameen, Umar Naseer.

The Elections Commission of the Maldives said earlier that nominees would be allowed to enter the presidential race officially starting on July 23 and ending on August 3.
