Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Aishath Nahula, said that the government has no plans to introduce a toll charge to access the Sinamalé Bridge.
Speaking at a radio program, Minister Nahula said that the people should be able to travel without hassle. She added that it is the government's utmost responsibility to ensure hassle-free travel for Maldivians following which, the government has no plans to introduce a toll charge to access the Sinamalé Bridge.
“It is a responsibility of any government in charge of the administration to provide hassle-free travel access for Maldivians, and I believe that it should be under basic needs for the people,” said Minister Nahula.
Initially, the government had planned to establish a toll system for the Sinamalé Bridge. However, the government has so far failed to establish the system.
The government had held talks about collecting a fee for the bridge since the establishment of a toll system was believed to be the optimum way to repay the Maldives loan to China.
