For the first time in the country's electric power generation and distribution history, two islands in G. Dh Atoll connect grids with a subsea cable.
The subsea power link was established between the Faresmaathoda Airport island and the residential island of Faresmaathoda.
Faresmaathoda Airport Island’s soundproof powerhouse has a 10 MW generation plant that is run on oil.
The subsea link and the networks are managed by the state-owned Fenaka Corporation Limited.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated Faresmaathoda Airport on 15 March 2023.
The airport was developed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) at a cost of roughly MVR 300 million under President Solih’s National Connectivity Policy.
The contractor installed a 1,200-meter by 30-meter runway alongside other modern airport facilities. The airport can serve 150 people per hour and can also accommodate flights at night.
