If elected to office for a second five-year term, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says that he would directly connect Maafaru International Airport to European airports.

President Solih made the pledge to the residents of Maafaru island while touring the atoll as part of his “Happy and Peaceful Maldives” presidential campaign.

He also told the residents of Maafaru that the government had formulated plans to make the island an economic hub in the Northern part of the country. This, he said, includes further expanding the airport and establishing development infrastructures in the region.

After the expansion of the airport, President Solih said that he would start to work on establishing direct flight links between the airport and European airports.

“When the government’s plans are implemented, this part of the country would become an economic hub”, said President Solih.
