According to the Election Commission (EC), a budget of MVR 44 million is needed to hold the second round of the Presidential elections.
Speaking at a press conference, EC Vice-President Ismail Habib said the Parliament approved a budget of MVR 90 million for the presidential elections last year. However, this amount will not cover the expenses of the second round, he said.
The EC initially asked for a total budget of MVR 120 million, noting that a budget of MVR 90 million cannot cover expenses for a second round of elections.
Eight candidates contested this year’s Presidential Election, but with no candidate winning over 50 percent of the votes, a second round of elections is now scheduled with the top two candidates with the most votes.
