The Government of the Republic of Maldives has strongly condemned the Israeli attack on the densely populated Jabalia Refugee Camp in northern Gaza that has caused death and injury to a large number of innocent Palestinians including several children.

Jabalia resident described the bombardment as “an earthquake” that shook the entire refugee camp. Gaza’s interior ministry reports the Jabalia refugee camp has been “completely destroyed” by Israeli bombardment. According to Health officials in Gaza, more than 50 people were killed in the strike on the Jabalia refugee camp.

In a statement condemning the attack, the Government of the Maldives said that it considers these deliberate acts of violence by Israel against the innocent civilian population of Palestine a gross violation of international humanitarian law, amounting to a war crime.

in its statement, the Government of Maldives reiterated its call upon the international community to take decisive measures to stop these attacks on innocent civilians and calls for an immediate ceasefire, to allow the unobstructed facilitation of humanitarian aid into Gaza, in accordance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution passed on 27 October 2023.

Jabalia is the largest of the Gaza Strip’s eight refugee camps. The people who live in Jabalia are people who were expelled from their original villages in 1948.

The densely populated camp in the north of the besieged enclave covers an area of only 1.4 square kilometers (0.5 sq miles). According to the UN, there are some 116,000 registered refugees in the camp.
