The Government of the Republic of Maldives has strongly condemned the recent statement made by an Israeli government Minister, who said that the use of a nuclear bomb on the besieged Gaza Strip is an option.

Israel's heritage minister Amichai Eliyahu said on Sunday that one of Israel’s options could be to drop a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip. Eliyahu, a member of the far-right Jewish Power party - commented in response to a question during a radio interview.

"Your expectation is that tomorrow morning we’d drop what amounts to some kind of nuclear bomb on all of Gaza, flattening them, eliminating everybody there," the Radio Kol Berama interviewer said.

"That’s one way," Eliyahu responded. "The second way is to work out what’s important to them, what scares them, what deters them… They’re not scared of death."

Condemning the statement, the Government of the Maldives said that the statement made by the Israeli government Minister is extremely concerning, especially at a time when the Israeli government is already engaged in disproportionate military aggression against innocent civilians in Palestine.

The Government of the Maldives also expressed its deep concern regarding the insufficient response from the Israeli government for a statement that represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian laws and calls the international community to address such rhetoric, which endangers the lives of Palestinians.

Before concluding the statement, the Government of the Maldives reiterated its call upon the international community to take immediate action to stop the attacks on innocent civilians and called for an immediate ceasefire to allow and strengthen efforts made to provide unobstructed humanitarian aid to the people in Palestine.
