The NewsIn Asia has reported that the burial of Sri Lankan deceased Muslims in the Maldives was suggested to the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, by the speaker of the Parliament of the Maldives, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed.
The report reads that the Muslim leaders of Sri Lanka had proposed that a Muslim dying of Covid-19 be wrapped in a body bag after the government had banned the burial of the Covid-19 dead on the grounds. Although the government appeared to be open to the suggestion by the Muslim leaders of Sri Lanka, it was dragging its feet on a decision.
Following the delay in the government's decision, some leading Muslims of Sri Lanka appealed to foreign leaders like Mohamed Nasheed, the Speaker of the Maldivian parliament, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Malaysian Prime Minister, and some Muslim leaders in Tamil Nadu, to allow Sri Lankan Muslim bodies to be buried on their soil. The leaders were open to the suggestion but wanted the deal to be a government to government one.
As per the NewsIn Asia report, at the stage of discussion with foreign leaders, Mohamed Nasheed suggested the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa about the idea of sending the bodies to the Maldives. However, following the official request made by the Sri Lankan President to the President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Solih has caused multiple debates among the political leaders of the Maldives. It also caused an uproar within the public.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government has given up the idea of sending the bodies of Muslims who had died of Covid-19 to the Maldives for burial and is expected to grant, permission to bury the bodies in Sri Lanka itself in concrete graves in Muslim graveyards.
