Central Hithadhoo Constituency Parliament Member Ahmed Azaan has defended his position on the recent emergency motion in parliament regarding the disclosure of information on political appointments and government spending. Opposition MDP MP Meekail Naseem introduced the motion, calling for transparency on the number of individuals hired for political posts and the salaries paid by government-owned companies.
Despite his background as a former journalist known for demanding government transparency, Azaan voted against the motion. Before his election to parliament, Azaan was noted for his relentless efforts to obtain information from the previous administration, including filing a court case over undisclosed agreements with India.
Azaan's vote against the motion has drawn criticism from various quarters. In response, he took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to clarify his stance, stating that he is not opposed to the disclosure of information. He described the motion brought by MP Meekail Naseem as a waste of time, suggesting that the current administration was already committed to transparency.
"The government will announce the number of political employees. President Muizzu has asked the relevant authorities to ensure that," Azaan stated, indicating that the information would be forthcoming without the need for the emergency motion.
