President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced his intention to propose a constitutional amendment to hold presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently starting from 2028.
This proposal, aimed at streamlining the electoral process, was disclosed during a rally organized by the Progressive National Congress (PNC), tonight.
Muizzu emphasized the benefits of aligning these elections, citing significant financial savings and operational efficiencies. He highlighted that conducting both elections together would save substantial amounts of public funds currently allocated separately for parliamentary and presidential election cycles.
The President pointed out that recent parliamentary elections cost over MVR 120 million, with an additional MVR 180 million spent on two rounds of presidential elections. Consolidating these elections, he argued, could save at least MVR 120 million, which could be redirected to benefit impoverished families and fund essential government programs.
This constitutional amendment must be ratified through a referendum, Muizzu clarified, stressing the democratic process required to enact such a change. He expressed confidence in public support for the amendment and announced his intention to formally submit it based on the outcome of public consultation.
