The aftermath of an Israeli military operation in Gaza City's Shujaiya neighborhood has left a grim toll, with around 60 bodies discovered amidst the rubble, officials in the Hamas-controlled territory reported Thursday.

The operation, which concluded recently according to Israeli military sources, resulted in extensive destruction across Shujaiya. Hamas officials stated that over 300 residential units and more than 100 businesses were obliterated in the area.

Local resident Mohammed Nairi described the scene upon returning to Shujaiya as "immense destruction that defies description. All the houses were demolished."

The military campaign, purportedly aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure, marked one of the heaviest periods of combat in Gaza City in recent months. Witnesses observed ongoing bombardments and troop movements following the purported conclusion of the operation in Shujaiya.

The conflict's escalation began with Hamas's attack on southern Israel, triggering retaliatory Israeli airstrikes and ground operations that have resulted in significant civilian casualties. The ongoing hostilities continue to pose humanitarian challenges and diplomatic hurdles as international efforts for a ceasefire intensify.
