Israeli forces clashed with Hamas-led fighters across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people due to Israeli bombardments in southern and central regions, according to Palestinian health officials. The Palestinian militant group Hamas accused Israel of intensifying attacks to undermine efforts by Arab mediators and the United States to broker a ceasefire. Israel, however, stated that its operations aim to eliminate Hamas fighters.

In Rafah, a southern border city where Israeli forces have been active since May, an airstrike on a house killed five Palestinians. Nearby in Khan Younis, an airstrike killed a man, his wife, and their two children. In the historic Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, separate shelling and aerial strikes resulted in at least four Palestinian deaths. Another Israeli airstrike killed four people in Sheikh Zayed in northern Gaza, medics reported.

The Israeli military confirmed ongoing “intelligence-based” activities in Rafah and targeted airstrikes against militants, tunnels, and other Hamas military infrastructure. The air force struck approximately 40 targets across the enclave, including sniper and observation posts, military structures, and buildings rigged with explosives.

The armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed their fighters attacked Israeli forces with anti-tank rockets and mortar bombs. Islamic Jihad’s armed wing also reported firing missiles at Sderot in southern Israel, though no deaths or significant damage were reported.

Relatives visited Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza to bid farewell to loved ones before funerals. The ongoing conflict has left many in Gaza exhausted and devastated, with a growing call for an urgent ceasefire agreement.
