MP and Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim has criticized the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government, blaming it for the current economic hardships faced by the Maldivian people. In a heated debate during the Parliament's discussion on the Finance Committee's report recommending the removal of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim, Gasim expressed his concerns about the country's economic situation.
Gasim attributed the economic difficulties to the loans taken by the two MDP governments, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) government, and the excessive spending by companies. He argued that these factors have collectively pushed the Maldivian economy into its current state.
Gasim emphasized that the previous administration's policies had forced people to rely on basic food items like Garudhiya and rice.
Gasim's remarks came in the context of discussing the potential removal of MMA Governor Ali Hashim. He referenced Hashim's own words as evidence of the economic challenges facing the nation. However, he noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had not yet informed members of Parliament about removing Hashim from his position.
The Finance Committee has now decided after thoroughly studying the matter, Gasim mentioned. He underscored the importance of taking necessary steps to address the economic issues, supporting any actions President Muizzu might deem necessary to improve the situation.
