Addu City Mayor Ibrahim Nizar has highlighted the strength of the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) foreign policy, emphasizing its effectiveness in strengthening international relations, particularly between India and the Maldives.
In connection with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to India, Nizar told X today that the policies being implemented currently show the strength of the MDP's foreign policies. He pointed out that President Muizzu’s efforts to build closer ties with India underscore the importance of diplomacy in regional cooperation.
Nizar stressed that political disagreements within the Maldives should be kept within the "Maldivian political wall" and should not extend into foreign relations. He urged for exemplary conduct in appreciating neighboring countries, emphasizing that actions and words should be carefully measured to maintain strong international relationships.
His remarks indirectly addressed the past anti-India rhetoric from members of the current government when they were in opposition, particularly during the "India Out" movement, which called for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives. Nizar noted that since assuming power, the government has shifted its stance and is now working towards strengthening ties with India in all possible ways.
