Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has raised concerns over MVR 4 billion in foreign aid given to the Maldives during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating the government has no records on how the funds were used.

Speaking at an event marking the government’s one-year anniversary, Minister Saeed noted that the Maldives had received MVR 8.7 billion in foreign aid during the pandemic. According to records from the previous administration, only MVR 4.2 billion was allocated to pandemic-related expenses. He questioned the whereabouts of the remaining funds.

“Where are the buildings or projects funded by the other four billion MVR? Whose accounts have this money ended up in?” Saeed questioned.

Minister Saeed warned that public trust would erode without accountability and transparency, stressing that a full audit of the aid funds is underway. He also highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s assurance that political imprisonment would not occur, emphasizing that any misuse of public funds would be thoroughly investigated.
