President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu underscored the importance of newly passed constitutional amendments, calling them vital for protecting the nation’s independence, sovereignty, and stability. In a video message delivered tonight, the President described the changes as transformative steps for the Maldives and its people.
Among the key amendments is the strengthening of requirements for altering the country’s territorial boundaries. Previously, such changes required a two-thirds majority in the People’s Majlis. The new amendment raises the threshold to a three-quarters majority. Additionally, the country's maritime boundaries can now extend up to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and any changes to these boundaries will require approval from both the People’s Majlis and a public referendum.
Another notable amendment mandates parliamentary approval before any foreign military personnel can be stationed within Maldivian territory, reflecting the government's commitment to national sovereignty.
Addressing public referendums, the President highlighted a significant change: any amendments to referendum-related articles in the Constitution must now be approved through a public referendum, ensuring greater public participation in crucial decisions.
Dr. Muizzu also pointed to the inclusion of the 'Anti-Defection' law in the Constitution as a pivotal step toward political stability. Furthermore, the amendments enshrine presidential responsibilities for devising short, medium, and long-term national development plans, ensuring continuity and strategic governance.
The President expressed gratitude to Members of Parliament for passing these amendments, describing them as acts of patriotism and national duty. He emphasized that these reforms safeguard the rights of Maldivian citizens while ensuring the country’s long-term independence, stability, and development.
