The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has alleged that the signature of one of its members; Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad, was forged to fraudulently register into the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC).
In a statement issued today, the MDP strongly condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation. The party has repeatedly raised concerns with the Election Commission (EC) regarding the unauthorized removal of some of its ordinary and National Assembly members from the MDP register and their subsequent inclusion in the PNC without their consent.
The party also expressed alarm over the potential consequences of such fraudulent transfers, warning that a Member of Parliament could lose their seat if their party affiliation was changed through a falsified form.
The MDP stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s party is attempting to forge signatures to reach 100,000 members and urged the EC to stop processing such fraudulent submissions.
Despite these concerns, the party noted that a fake form submitted in the name of an MP was approved by the EC, which it deemed unacceptable. In response, the MDP announced plans to visit the EC today to obtain a copy of the alleged fraudulent form submitted in the name of MP Ziyad.
The MDP further called on the relevant authorities to investigate and take action against the misuse of the Department of National Registration database, accusing the ruling party of involvement in fraudulent activities.
