The Democrats have issued a fiery response to a statement by MDP President Abdulla Shahid, in which he suggested that the government could be overthrown.

MDP President Shahid reportedly declared that his party is now prepared to topple the government. This remark has sparked a heated exchange between the two parties, with the Democrats accusing Shahid of hypocrisy.

Democrats Secretary General Ali Razzan told X that Shahid played a central role in the downfall of the first MDP government, which they claim was overthrown in a coup. Razzan further alleged that Shahid is now attempting to deflect blame for past events onto the entire MDP to protect his reputation.

The criticism was amplified when Democrats' Interim President Hussain Firshan reposted Razzan's remarks, signaling broader support for the accusations within the party.

The Democrats’ statements recall the events of 2012, when then-President Mohamed Nasheed, the first leader of the MDP, resigned amidst what his party describes as a coup. At the time, Abdulla Shahid was a member of the DRP and signed the legal affidavit that facilitated Mohamed Waheed’s ascension to the presidency. The MDP has long accused Shahid of acting in haste to legitimize the transfer of power.

The escalating war of words between the Democrats and the MDP highlights growing tensions as both parties seek to control the political narrative surrounding these events.
