First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has called for the creation of a sustainable, climate-smart agricultural sector capable of withstanding the impacts of natural disasters. She made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Climate Resilient Agriculture for Food Security in the Maldives Conference.

In her speech, the First Lady stressed the need for capacity-building among farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices that can improve resilience to climate-related challenges. She pointed out that while chemical fertilizers may boost growth in the short term, they ultimately hinder long-term sustainability and climate-friendly agricultural practices.

Highlighting the importance of empowering local farmers, entrepreneurs, and communities, the First Lady emphasized the need for access to cutting-edge information and technology. She noted that embracing artificial intelligence (AI) in agriculture could revolutionize the sector by improving precision, optimizing resource usage, and boosting productivity, ultimately fostering a more resilient food system.

The First Lady also discussed the significant health benefits of long-term food security, particularly in the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). She urged that the promotion of healthy food consumption should be accompanied by strict measures to ensure food safety standards are maintained in national strategies for climate-resilient agriculture.

The conference, organized by the Maldives National University (MNU) and the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), brought together policymakers, industry experts, and academics to discuss advancements in climate-resilient agriculture and food security in the Maldives. The event provided a crucial platform to assess vulnerabilities, explore climate-smart solutions, and foster partnerships aimed at enhancing food security and resilience to climate change.
