The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to provide electric vehicle (EV) taxi services in Malé, aiming to enhance urban transportation with an environmentally friendly alternative.
The agreement was signed today between the Ministry of Transport and MTCC at a ceremony attended by officials from both parties. MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudhy signed the agreement on behalf of the company.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to improve transport services in the capital and promote sustainable mobility. Transport Minister Mohamed Amin stated that the EV Taxi Line service would address ongoing challenges in securing taxis within Malé.
He noted that studies indicate taxis will be available within one to two minutes of requesting a ride. He added that this will provide a major solution to the long taxi queues, including at Velana International Airport.
The introduction of EV taxis is expected to reduce waiting times for passengers while also supporting the Maldives’ commitment to environmental sustainability.
