The government has launched an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, with Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen calling for it not to be politicized.
At a ceremony held today, the Ministry of Transport awarded the contract to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). Minister Ameen stated that the government’s role is to regulate taxi services and ensure they meet proper standards, rather than entering the industry as a competitor.
The service will operate through MTCC-developed software, which will assign destinations to drivers instead of allowing them to choose routes. Taxis are expected to be available within a minute of request, addressing transport challenges in Malé.
Minister Amen emphasized that the initiative is solely aimed at solving a critical public issue in a densely populated area and assured that it would not disrupt private businesses.
